Believe it or not, but she is using this cute spud-sack to store potatoes in!!!!!

After all, burlap was designed to aerate the spuds all the while keeping them contained...

What an idea.....

Anyway, I just love what she has come up with, 

especially the little "Spuds" embellishment at the front....

Burlap Sack Messenger Bag

Hello there!

Included is a picture of a messenger bag made by Graham, which he sent me after requesting the free potato sack preparation tips PDF file, which I offer free to anyone who asks....

This is What Graham told me about the bag:

"A few more details about it, it's11 1/2 inches tall by 12 inches wide.  The strap is made of a 42 inch strip of 3 inch wide burlap with the ends folded in to make a strap that's 1 1/2 inches wide.  Funny story about the sack that I used for this.  I went into my local coffee roasters to try and buy a few sacks so that I could cut them up and use them for wrapping some of my outdoor plants, and they just gave me about 12 sacks.  Some were nicer than others, so I kept the nice, tighter weave ones for crafts."

Melissa Potato Sack Burlap Handbag with Three Rosettes

Good Morning Friends!!

I can't get over how beautiful this month is.  The weather is mild and gorgeous.

No wind.  The sun is shining {but not tooooo hot....}

Oh, how I love September!

If only if t could be September all year around... 

My husband informed me that it is September only about 1/12 of the year....

 I have to keep positive and soak it up as long as I can!

Another Wonderful Shabby Burlap Rose on a Burlap Bag.....!!!!

Hello there!!!!
Just so excited to share with you what Nancy from La Maison Reid has been up to lately.....

Let me tell you the background story:
First she saw a darling burlap purse online but it was $95!!!!   Now, she said she could afford $95 for a purse but wanted the challenge of seeing if she make one as cute for a whole lot less than $95!!!!!  So she hit the sewing room and came out with a VERY EXTREMELY STRIKINGLY darling burlap purse....!!!!  {not just a "regular" darling purse like the one she had seen online.....)

 

Nancy describes with wonderful pictures  on her blog how she fabricated the burlap bag.

 

She used the method from our own sister blog {Tutorial Boutique} to make the shabby burlap rose, 

like the one shown in Haute Handbags {Spring 2010 Issue}. 

 

It is so fun to see what the bloggy readers have come up with!

Calcium Nitrate Gunny Sack

As we vacationed in Central-Idaho, we came upon a gold dredge in the Sunbeam area. It was a wonderful "please touch" exhibit the children thoroughly enjoyed. One of the displays {which was completely unrelated to all the dredge displays} was this wonderful old gunny sack that used to contain Calcium Nitrate. I was so excited to see it and HAD to take this picture. Don't you just love the nostalgia that accompanies it?


This is what the tag reads:

Not used in this dredge

This is what the gunny sack reads {OK, so I had a hard time making it all out....}:

Purses Made Out Of Feed Sacks

It is just so wonderful to see a purse that is made out of a feed sack!
I love the "green" feel to it.I love the outdoor, rural feel of reusing an existing burlap sack.
I love the feel of living off the land and making due with what you have that a real potato sack purse gives.


I love the feel of farming and country living that you get when you think of the original purpose of the feed sack.
Purses made out of burlap sacks are just wonderful!
Purses made out of feed sacks make you feel good to be alive!

Shabby Chic Burlap

A scrumptious shabby chic combination of fringe, a petite flower print, and {of course} a real potato sack.

Messenger bags are so convenient to carry around because they truly keep your hands free. The ribbon tie at the top keeps the bag securely closed.

the DYI-Dish regularly does projects with burlap.


They mostly use regular burlap, but wouldn't it be cute to duplicate their fun designs with a burlap potato sack, so the print shows at random....?

I think it would be just striking and amazing.

How to Store Potatoes

Storing Potatoes (from the Gardeners Shop):

Do store potatoes in burlap potato sacks to allow potatoes to breathe.

Do handle potatoes with care as they bruise easily.

Do place potato sacks in a frost free, dark, dry & well ventilated area.

Do keep the potatoes away from strong smells or chemicals.

Do Not store potatoes in the fridge, the starch produced creates a horrible taste.

Do Not store potatoes in direct sunlight, as the potatoes will turn green and taste bitter.

"Potato Sack" Dresses on Project Runway

A little while ago the assignment on Project Runway was to make something suitable for a party out of a potato sack.
I was excited about that assignment, but very surprised when I found out that instead of using genuine potato sacks, they were using regular burlap.
The dresses they came up with are cute. Some are cuter than others, but none of them look like a potato sack. I guess they aren't supposed to... Or maybe they were. I don't know.
Anyway. I thought it was cool to see this assignment, but I would have liked it a LOT more had they used actual potato sacks with actual "Grown in Idaho" print. I gotta speak up for Idaho, right? Plus regular burlap is much easier to work with than genuine potato sacks. A-ha! Maybe that's my motivation! I wished they would have felt my pain. HA!
No, that's horrible to think that.
